Arts and Culture
San Francisco is a cultural center
that brings artists, tourists, and arts aficionados to our city.
From independent filmmaking and ethnic community theatre to multi-cultural
performances and the latest musical grooves, our city has so very
much to offer. Let’s face it. In some parts of town, it’s
the vital Arts scene that makes a neighborhood jump.
I have been a supporter of the arts
community for years. When Newt Gingrich and others in the extreme
wing of the Republican Party was attacking freedom of expression,
I, as a former program director of Media Alliance, helped organize
people to stand up to him. As a charter member of the SF Arts Democratic
Club, I joined in coalition to fight for increased funding for smaller,
multi-cultural arts organizations through the City’s Grants
for the Arts program.
I support a strong Grants-for-the-Arts
program funded through the existing Hotel Tax Fund. And I will make
sure that smaller, community-based arts groups are not left hanging
with minuscule funds.
Tourism
– Directly and indirectly, Arts (including music) facilities
and organizations account for a rather large percentage of the jobs
in our city. We must keep our arts scene up and running. Failure
to do so is not an option in my book.
Permits
– We need to streamline the permitting process for individual
artists trying to sell their goods to tourists and residents.
Live/work
Housing
– I support the creation of Live/work lofts for artists. But
we must create strict and enforceable criteria to make sure our
goal of helping the artist find affordable housing is realized.
