Better Government
Dan's four-point
plan to make our local government more responsive includes:
•
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Making customer service a top priority at city departments
is paramount. We passed a ballot measure several years ago that
I supported to require the creation of customer service plans at
city departments. However, the follow-up at many departments has
been inadequate to say the least. I am committed to working with
department heads, the Mayor, and front-line workers to create a
stronger customer service ethics at City Hall.
•
COMMUNITY SERVICE -
I am a long-time community service volunteer and the founding chair
of the DCCC's community service committee. I plan to engage every
elected official in City Hall in participating in various community
service projects. More frequent participation in hands-on community
service creates opportunities to engage residents/community members
while doing good work out in the district(s). This presents opportunities
to establish connections between the elected officials and the people
we are suppose to serve. I promise to continue and even step up
my involvement in community service projects in District 5 communities.
•
NEIGHBORHOOD PROBLEM-SOLVING
- If we (as elected officials) want to build confidence among the
public that we can solve big problems, we have to do a better job
at showing that we can solve small problems. As a Supervisor, I
will propose that the all the relevant departments develop a set
of procedures to address the most common problems that the public
presents to that office. Then the public will have clearer expectations
and, at the same time, the departments will be held accountable
to meet those expectations. Some departments move too slow in responding
to real problems in the district. My commitment to you is to change
that.
•
TOWN-HALL LISTENING SESSIONS
- I am making a commitment to have TEN town-hall listening sessions
in the district each year. Most of these will be co-hosted by nonprofit
community groups or neighborhood associations. Some will be
on specific issue areas, others will be open-ended. All too often
at community town-hall meetings, the elected leaders spend most
of the time talking. I want to do things differently. I want to
engage community members and listen to what people have to say.
I want your ideas and I want to respond to your questions about
my ideas.
In addition to my
four-point plan, I am making a commitment to strictly adhere to
the letter and spirit our our open meetings and sunshine laws.
This is a fundamental necessity if we are to achieve a greater level
of confidence and trust among the public. As a former S.F. Ethics
Commissioner, I will also work on reducing the undue influence that
well-financed special interests have on the policy-making process
in City Hall.
