Bicycle-Friendly Planning
I plan to fully implement the Citywide
Bicycle Network and San Francisco Bike Plan. In
district 5, this includes improving the Fell/ Masonic Intersection
and creating a bike lane on Masonic from Fell to Geary. I will take
a leadership role in supporting the implementation of the plan and
its priority projects citywide.
I will actively support an official
city goal that 10% of commute trips in San Francisco be made by
bicycle. Furthermore, I believe we should establish
a longer-term goal of 15% by 2020. Our shared vision of a livable,
walk-able, bike-friendly community calls for nothing less. I would
also support a directive to the Municipal Transportation Agency
(MTA) to support a Citywide Bike Network, including on bus routes.
I strongly support requiring that newly
proposed office developments have sufficient amenities (secure bike
parking, showers, etc.) for cyclists as a condition of project approval.
The easier we make it for people to ride their bikes,
the more they will ride! Amenities such as showers and secure parking
ease people’s concerns about commuting via bicycle.
I’ve been a long-time advocate
of closing Market Street (between 10th street to foot of Market)
to private auto traffic. Such a proposal would transform
Market Street into a bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit oasis!
I would take the lead in implementing
‘bicycle boulevards’ in San Francisco, starting with
Page Street. With proper community input, bicycle
boulevards work extremely well as bicycle commute pathways. They
can also improve pedestrian safety when implemented properly. I
look forward to working with the residents of Page Street and the
cycling community to find a solution that works well for everyone.
I want to make existing bike
lanes safer by making them wider
and painting the street so they are clearly distinguishable from
the rest of the street lanes. I also want to create separated bike
paths in feasible locations.
Other Priorities include
putting bike lanes on 7th Avenue in the Inner Sunset, using traffic
calming mechanisms more extensively in key neighborhoods, and improving
bicycle access to and through Golden Gate Park. I strongly support
the Saturday closure of JFK in GG Park.
