CIVIL RIGHTS - Beyond Tolerance!

My platform highlights the need to go beyond the buzz word 'tolerance' and move toward genuine acceptance of people. My support for civil rights and civil liberties is strong and unwavering.
Some of my specific commitments include the following:

Hate Crimes - Support for expanding our Hate Crimes units in the police department and the D.A.'s office. Hate crimes are certainly not to be tolerated and I will work with the appropriate agencies to make sure hate crimes are vigorously prosecuted.

Gay Marriage - I fully support the Mayor's efforts to provide marriage rights and opportunities to gay men and lesbians in our city. It has been my belief for years that any two single, consenting adults in love should have the right to make a formal commitment of marriage to each other. Anything less diminishes is wholly unfair and therefore diminishes all of us. As in interim step, I am fully in support of Domestic Partnership equal benefits and rights.

Fair Housing - I am committed to taking pro-active efforts to enforce the letter and spirit of our state and local fair housing laws.

Employment Discrimination - I will work to beef up the resources of the Human Rights Commission to make sure employment discrimination becomes a thing of the past in our city. I also support the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in Congress.

State Propositions - I spoke out against and actively opposed propositions 209 and 54.
