Helping the Homeless
As a strong supporter of Angela
Alioto's and the Mayor's Ten-Year Plan to Abolish Chronic Homelessness,
I will take the lead on introducing legislation to implement the
key elements of this plan.
The most significant
key to moving our homeless population off the streets is to provide
transitional supportive housing. I support Proposition A--the Affoedable
Housing Bond-- on the November ballot. A significant portion of
these funds will go to create supportive housing in our city. If
we are truly serious about reducing the number of people who are
living--and dying--on the streets, we must provide funding for supportive
housing--including the support services that will truly help homeless
individuals and families improve their lives.
An urgent part of
my plan is to create 24-hour access to psychiatric care and services
for our homeless population in multiple locations. By most accounts,
over one-third of the homeless population has some sort of mental
illness. The more accessible psychiatric care is for these individuals,
the more of them can be moved into voluntary on-going treatment.
