AFFORDABLE HOUSING
As a steering committee member of
the S.F. Housing Action Coalition, I have been active in supporting
affordable housing developments throughout our city. I am strongly
supporting Proposition A--the Affordable Housing bond measure on
this November’s ballot. Please Vote YES on A.
As a renter and a supporter of rent
control, I know how difficult it can be to find an affordable rental
unit in our city. Several years ago, I was subjected to an Owner
Move-In (OMI) eviction, and given only 30 days to find a new place
to live. As your Supervisor, I will make sure that renters are protected
from unfair and unlawful evictions. And I will do this without demonizing
property owners.
As a Supervisor, I will work with
groups such as the Affordable Housing Alliance, Council of Community
Housing Organizations, Habitat for Humanity, S.F. Housing Action
Coaliton (on which I currently serve as a steering committee member),
Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, Local Initiatives Support
Corporation (LISC) Bay Area, Nonprofit Housing Association of Northern
California, San Francisco Organizing Project, PolicyLink, San Francisco
Planning and Urban Research (SPUR), the San Francisco Tenants Union,
Transportation for a Livable City, and others to fashion and implement
a housing policy that focuses on the creation of new affordable
housing with an emphasis on ensuring long-term affordability.
As your Supervisor, I will have
the city earmark funding and create incentives to construct new
Limited Equity housing for lower and moderate income residents who
want to own their own home. I fully support the Community Land Trust
model that is being discussed at City Hall.
Transit-oriented housing should
take priority. I will also make sure that when new larger housing
developments are approved for construction, that improvements and
upgrade in transit services and other infrastructure are funded
and approved concurrent with and in proportion to the additional
housing units that will be created.
I support the successful efforts
of SFOP to pass the Surplus Property Ordinance. The ordinance requires
that all city departments set-aside vacant or underutilized land
for the development of permanently affordable housing for homeless
and low-income families and individuals.
I also want to selectively incentivize
the conversion of vacant office buildings into housing or mixed-use
buildings.
I want to extend the City’s
Green Building requirements to new housing construction for buildings
of 10 units or more.
