Public Transit - MUNI
We already have a
stable source of funding for MUNI capital expenditures (the sales
tax for transit). We need to create a stable funding source for
MUNI operating expenses. Therefore, I support working with interested
parties to create a new Downtown Transit Assessment District with
the funds earmarked exclusively for MUNI operations.
I support the creation of a Bus Rapid
Transit Network in San Francisco to move commuters more efficiently.
I also support extending MUNI light rail lines along additional
selected corridors. However, we need to first focus on getting our
existing light rail to run more efficiently.
I will require the Municipal Railway
(MUNI) to conduct rider surveys on a more frequent basis, and then
pay attention the patterns of suggestions/concerns in those surveys.
I also support extending the 'Next Bus' passenger information system
to all MUNI lines in our city. I am proud to have the support of
the person who brought 'Next Bus' to San Francisco.
I support the electrification of
the CalTrain train system and extending it to the downtown Transbay
Terminal. Additionally, I support the building of a High-Speed Rail
system in California.
Transit issues are often regional
in nature. I have experience working with the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission (MTC) and Supervisors from other counties on regional
transit issues. I will use that experience to forge regional cooperation
and better coordination among the myriad of transit districts in
the Bay Area. I also support a feasibility study of merging MUNI,
SamTrans and CalTrain into one transit agency.
