NEIGHBORHOOD
CONCERNS
CLEAN
STREETS – Let’s
face it, many of our streets and sidewalks are embarrassingly trash-lined
and dirty. I am committed to making sure there is sufficient money
in the budget to clean our streets and sidewalks regularly. I will
hold the Department of Public Works accountable for the condition
of our streets and sidewalks. I will create an ad hoc task force
that includes merchants' associations, neighborhood activists and
city agency heads to focus on keeping our streets and sidewalks
clean.
STREETSCAPES
– Urban planning
should include beautiful, tree-lined streets. Trees and well landscaped
streets add to the beauty and feel of a neighborhood. I have organized
tree-plantings in district 5 as a volunteer and I am committed to
increasing the number of trees planted in district 5 and throughout
our city. Public projects should be required to include experienced
landscape architects as part of their design team.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY –
As a Supervisor, one of my top priorities will be to create a Pedestrian
Master Plan for San Francisco. For seniors, children, our disabled
residents, and for every person who walks in our city, I am committed
to putting pedestrians first. We need to require that most intersections
upgrade their walk signals and that signals should be timed to make
sure that pedestrians are able to walk fully across the intersection.
We need to improve signage, create sidewalk bulbs to shorten crossing
time, and up enforcement efforts to protect pedestrians.
My plan will include
strategic placement of additional stop signs and a neighborhood
task force to help provide input into pedestrian safety improvements.
I also support the selective use of traffic calming on selected
streets
RESPONSIVENESS From CITY HALL
– I have a four-point plan to make improve local government
and make city hall be more responsive to community concerns. My
plan includes improving customer service, engaging our elected officials
in community service, getting city departments to better solve neighborhood
problems, and have ten town-hall listening sessions each year to
hear from constituents. See Better Government (John, add link to
Better Government page)
NEIGHBORHOOD
DISPUTE RESOLUTION
– As a 10-year neighborhood mediator with Community Boards,
I know how vital it is to address conflicts early on before they
escalate into something bigger. I intend to work with community-based
organizations to make sure that small, neighbor-to-neighbor disputes
are resolved peaceably and in a timely manner. My office will take
a strong role in helping to resolve neighborhood conflicts.
COMMUNITY-BASED
PLANNING – The
City Planning Department needs to do a better job at involving residents
in key neighborhood planning efforts early on. I will work with
key department heads to make sure there is better coordination among
departments and improved communication to community members throughout
the planning process.
PROTECTION
Of INDEPENDENT SMALL BUSINESSES
– I strongly support Supervisor Gonzalez’s formula-retail
legislation to restrict chain stores from coming into key neighborhood
business districts. I worked to keep chain stores out of the inner
sunset business district and I will continue to work with neighborhood
merchants to protect and promote our locally-owned, independent
businesses.
note: If you think I should add an additional concern/problem specific
to your neighborhood, please contact me via this web site. I genuinely
look forward to hearing from you.
