Dan Kalb has strived to make the City Council a better and more engaged partner with our public schools. Prior to his election, Dan served on the Youth Leadership and Community Safety Strategic Planning Task Force for the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth.
Dan knows how to partner with OUSD to address chronic absenteeism and grade-level literacy, thereby helping to improve outcomes and equity in our public schools.
- Created an innovative partnership with OUSD to reduce chronic absenteeism and truancy in public elementary schools.
- Meets monthly with the District 1 School Board member to discuss school needs and ways to collaborate.
- Was named California Public Library Advocates’ 2015 Outstanding Elected Official for advocacy on behalf of Oakland Public Libraries.
- Strongly supports the increased use of restorative justice and peer conflict mediation in our schools.
