Youth & Families
Child
Care -
I am committed to making sure that all residents who work in the
city have access to affordable child care for their children who
are under the age of 10. This will mean modest subsidies for lower-income
families and requirements for larger employers to have either on-site
child care or to pay into a pool for their employees. I would also
like to encourage the creation of child care centers at key transit
stations throughout the Bay Area.
These solutions won't solve the problem for everyone, but it will
help many families who are struggling to make a living while raising
their children. I intend to work with policy experts and service
providers in the child care field as well as our Children and Families
Commission to come up with the most sensible and cost-effective
solutions available.
Youth
Violence - Violence
prevention is one of my top priorities and I will do everything
in my power to help us unite as a city to address youth violence
problems in every impacted neighborhood. We need a comprehensive
set of solutions that will attack the violence problem from all
angles. These solutions will include expansion of anti-recidivism
programs in Juvenile Hall, support for Boys and Girls Clubs and
after-school programs, and early gang intervention programs that
have proven to be effective in other communities.
Additionally, we
need to do a better job in recognizing the contributions of foster
parents and providing adequate support for these non-traditional
families.
