Increasing Ethics, Accountability & Transparency in Government
Californians rightfully want a government that they believe listens to them and makes policy decisions based on what is best for our residents. Increasing the public’s trust in government has been a fundamentally important cause for Dan throughout his career. As a staffer for California Common Cause, Dan successfully advocated for strong campaign reform and open government laws. More recently, Dan lobbied for passage of the CA Disclose Act to bring honesty and transparency to ballot proposition ads.
He has spent years working to make government more transparent, effective, and trustworthy – but he knows there is more to be done. As a City Councilmember, Dan has worked to improve government ethics and transparency. Recognizing his achievements, the East Bay Express named Dan Best Good-Government Politician of 2014.
On the Oakland City Council, Dan kalb:
Wrote and spearheaded the comprehensive Public Ethics Commission Charter Reform measure and the Government Ethics ordinance in 2014
Promoted increased transparency at City of Oakland commissions and advisory boards
Supported the creation of a ‘Rainy Day’ fund in the city’s budget
Continues to prioritize transparency and customer service at City Hall
As a long-time leader on campaign finance reform and governmental ethics, Dan will work closely with the Public Ethics Commission to strengthen our laws relating to lobbyists, corporate campaign donors, and government transparency.
